About 5% of students in the UK – and more males than females – have worked in the sex industry, according to a study spearheaded by Swansea University. This includes direct and indirect sex work, as well as organisational roles.

Meanwhile, 22% of students (and more females this time) said they have thought about moonlighting as a sex worker.

Financial reasons were among the most popular motivations for doing sex work. For most of the students who were or had been involved in the sex industry, such a sideline helps fund their lifestyle, living costs and/or their education.

A total of 6,773 students were surveyed for the Student Sex Work Project, which also included interviews with students in the sex industry. The extensive study, carried out over three years, tackles issues such as health and safety concerns, support services available to students working in the sex industry and the stigma surrounding sex workers.
